Training Requirements
Mandatory Safety Training

All users must complete the following safety training before working in the Environmental Genomics Facility:

Depending on the project, the following training may also be required:

User Equipment Training
  • Users must be trained prior to using the equipment in the Environmental Genomics Facility.
  • All training is in-person with the guidance of the Core Manager, a certified equipment technician and operator, or an assigned mentor.
  • Equipment training is available for both the 96-well and 384-well blocks of the QuantStudio 12K Flex system. Users can be trained to prepare their samples for the OpenArray block and AccuFill; however, they are not to run it themselves.
  • NGS preparation training can be provided, but running on the system is done only by the Core Manager .
  • Training and use of the Tecan Spark is available for all users.
  • Please contact the Core Manager for any inquiries about the training to use equipment in the Environmental Genomics Facility.
Core Policies / Protocols

If you are new user interested in the services offered by the Environmental Genomics Facility, please contact the Core Manager to schedule an initial assessment meeting to learn more about how the facility can help with your research.

Scheduling Equipment Usage
  • To schedule an appointment to use the equipment in the Environmental Genomics Facility, please submit a request through our contact form.
Late Arrival:
  • Please notify the Core Manager by phone or e-mail if you are going to be late for your scheduled appointment. The technician will move on to the next project in-line for users that are more than 10 minutes late. Second time late arrivals will be charged a $50 fee.

  • No-shows will be charged the full amount of the booking.
EGF Data Management:
  • Data collected at the Environmental Genomics Facility is considered temporary storage during experimentation and will not be backed up. It is the responsibility of the users to save copies of their raw data at the end of their experiment when it is available.
  • The Environmental Genomics Facility is not responsible for any lost data and will not store data long term. All users should ensure that they have proper plans for data storage, backup, and security prior to using the facility.
Environmental Genomics Facility Protocols
  • Users are expected to follow good lab practices (GLP) including courteous behaviour to other users and the EGF staff.
  • The EGF follows laboratory safety guidelines as determined by the University of Windsor’s health and safety board.
  • The EGF has a strict policy regarding the following:
